How To Style Table Lamps For Every Space

After deciding on the type of table lamp design you’re looking for, it’s time to learn how to put the piece into your space like a pro! Our in-house stylists have compiled their top tips and tricks for incorporating a table lamp into every room in your home:

Bedroom Table Lamp Styling

Your sleep sanctuary for rest and relaxation, the bedroom balances both function and aesthetic appeal to create a cosy and inviting space. To style a table lamp in the bedroom, our top tip is to match your lamp size to the bedside table

If you have a small bedside table, look for a petite bedside table lamp with a narrow base or shorter heights to ensure it doesn’t take up too much space and limit the function of the bedside table. After all, you’ll need to use the tabletop to charge phones, place books and style with candles!

On the other hand, if you have a large bedside table, consider a taller table lamp that add height and balance. This can create more of a design statement for visual impact when you walk into the room for extra wow-factor. Whichever option works best for your space remember this simple rule: the bottom of the table lampshade should sit at eye-level when sitting in bed.

When styling, consider choosing matching table lamps for a balanced, symmetrical and coordinated look. Or if you are after something more eclectic, choose different table lamps for each side of the bed for the ultimate style statement. Add the finishing touches and style candles, books and trays bedside the table lamp to complete the look!

Living Room Table Lamp Styling

A place to gather, unwind and even entertain, the living room is where people gather. So, the table lamps in this space must add warmth, depth and ambience! To style a table lamp in the living room, start by picking the perfect spot. You can place table lamps on side tables, consoles, entertainment units and credenzas next to seating areas for cosiness or next to couches and armchairs for more functional task lighting.

Next, choose a table lamp that complements the furniture next to it. Lower tables and furniture typically pair best with taller lamps while high consoles and sideboards suit smaller table lamps. For example, an entertainment unit often suits a smaller table lamp, so it doesn’t overwhelm and take interest away from the TV, while side tables can have a slightly taller lamp to disperse light into your living room and create a style statement. Either way, just ensure sightlines aren’t blocked to maintain flow and function!

In terms of design, look around your living room and find elements that you can echo in your table lamp. Consider the base of the lamp and match to existing hardware, finishes and textures while the table lamp shade can complement curtains, rugs or cushions to create the most cohesion. This way your table lamp will fit right into your living room and feel like it’s been there all along!

Layer lighting by combining your table lamp with floor lamps, overhead lighting and candles to level up the ambience in your living room! Finish styling by combining the table lamp with books, coasters, vases or trays to balance the piece in your space.

Entryway Table Lamp Styling

One of the first things you see as you walk into a home, the entryway also needs ambient lighting too! Use this moment to create a style statement and opt for a table lamp that stands out and aligns with your signature sense of style to give guests a taste of your personality as soon as they step through your front door.

For smaller spaces such as entryways, we like to style petite table lamps with a unique shape or finish on top of consoles, sideboards or narrow hallway tables with a mirror or artwork hanging behind it. This intentional styling method can create a sense of purpose for this awkward space. Just ensure the table lamp matches the width of your furniture to avoid an overhang!

Kitchen Table Lamp Styling

A recent style trend to bring cosiness and ambience back into the heart of the home is styling table lamps in kitchens. Forget bright cold lights and a clinical feel, bring a warm glow back into your kitchen by styling a small table lamp in the space. Mirror colours, tones, hardware and finishes in your kitchen by replicating some of these elements in your table lamp design to bring the room together and add the perfect finishing touch. Place in an empty corner of your kitchen with low lighting (yes, we all have one) to bring functional lighting for late night snacks, kitchen conversations, date nights and beyond!

Office & Study Table Lamp Styling

A balance of function and form, the office table lamp boosts productivity whilst adding to the ambience and aesthetic of the space. Match the table lamp with your desk size and width, opting for an option that doesn’t overwhelm or take away from the functional use of your desk. For compact desks we recommend a narrow and small table lamp, while for large office desks with plenty of space we recommend a large table lamp that offers more light coverage.

A top stylist tip is to place the table lamp on the opposite side to your dominant hand to reduce shadows while writing! Style your office table lamp with a notepad, planner, tray and small plant to soften the look and tie the room together.

Table Lamp FAQs

How to choose a table lamp?

Before beginning to select your lamp it’s important to consider how you plan to use the table lamp in your space. In design, there are three main purposes of table lamps: task lighting, general lighting and accent lighting:

  • Task Lighting: A table lamp used for activities (ie. writing or reading)
  • Accent Lighting: A table lamp used to create focal points in your space (i.e. feature artwork)
  • General Lighting: A table lamp for general use (ie. Add ambience)

From there, consider the style and design of the space and choose a lamp that amplifies it. For example, if you’re going for a Hamptons look and need general lighting, a lamp with a glass base and linen lamp shade would be a great choice!

A general rule of thumb is a table lamp should at a maximum reach eye height while you are sitting in bed! This can ensure it’s not too tall to overwhelm the space but able to add ambience and provide functional lighting if needed
