Looking for comfortable, soft and absorbent towels?

Stepping out of your shower and wrapping yourself up in a comfortable, soft and absorbent bath towel is one of the simple pleasures in life – but how do you pick the right towel?

Bath towels are a household necessity. At Pillow Talk, our towels are both stylish and practical – without compromising on quality. When it comes to selecting the perfect bath towel, of course, colour comes into play, but there are a whole host of other influential factors that should be considered.

What are towels & what are they used for?

A towel is an absorbent cloth used for drying. Bath towels and bath sheets are used to dry the body after a shower or bath, hand towels are used to dry the hands after washing them and washers are used to help wash and dry the face.

How to Choose a Towel

Choosing the best towel for you comes down to what you need the towel to be. Whether you’re looking for a luxe, hotel-like feeling or something quick-drying and lightweight, there are plenty of bath towel options within Pillow Talk’s range to choose from!

One of the first elements to consider when choosing your towels is how many you are looking for and whether you’re looking for a towel set or an individual towel. If you are looking to add a little luxury to your bathroom, a set of towels that includes a larger bath sheet, a regular towel, a hand towel and one or two washers for each person that uses the bathroom is the way to go. Looking to stock the kid’s bathroom? Consider getting a bath towel set for each of your children, with a different colour for each – no more fights over whose towels have been left on the floor and no more getting them mixed up! Alternatively, if you’re looking for a quick-drying towel for the gym a single lightweight bath towel or sports towel may be all you need.

Another element to consider is the size and feel you want. Do you like a plush, larger size towel to wrap yourself up in? You’ll likely love a larger sized bath sheet, which is bigger than a standard bath towel, with a higher GSM. Looking for a more lightweight, convenient towel that’s quick-drying and doesn’t take up too much space? Bath towels with a lower GSM made from natural fibres such as cotton are an excellent lightweight choice.

Australian Cotton Bath Towels

Types of Towels

Australian Pure Cotton Towels

Many aspects of cotton make it the ‘comfortable choice’, and Australian cotton growers produce some of the longest, strongest and most contamination-free cotton in the world. A renewable resource, cotton fibres are spun into yarn and then woven into a beautifully soft, natural and biodegradable fabric. As cotton is natural, it is gentle on the skin so perfect for people with allergies and respiratory conditions. Cotton is easy to care for, being a very durable fabric, so you can let your washing machine do the work for you.

Cotton Bamboo Towels

The high growth rate of bamboo and its’ ability to survive in many different climates make it an amazing renewable resource. Bamboo fibre is lightweight, extremely absorbent and soft. The fibre is naturally smooth and consequently less irritable to sensitive skin. The result is an absorbent towel that stays fresh for longer.

Zero Twist Cotton

Zero twist cotton has very low or no twist, and can only be constructed from long staple cotton. The lack of twist in the yarn allows the cotton fibres to open up, letting air reach the inner parts of the yarn more quickly, increasing absorbency and reducing the time it takes to dry. The result is a plush, absorbent and fast-drying towel with the ability to absorb up to four times more moisture by weight than conventional towels.

Benefits of Zero Twist Cotton Bath Towels:

  • A natural fibre
  • Absorbent
  • Plush
  • Quick drying

Like Zero-twist cotton, Aqua Fibro is a newer spinning technology where micro air holes are created inside the yarn during the spinning process. This allows for an extremely absorbent towel that is ultra-soft and quick-drying. A benefit of this newer technology is reduced linting.

Towel Sizes

A standard bath towel is what most people think of when they think of a towel. They measure approx. 70cm x 140cm and are great for smaller bathrooms or for those with a smaller body frame. If you’re finding a regular bath towel a little too small, or just want to be able to wrap yourself up in a soft towel a bath sheet is a great option. Measuring approx. 80cm x 160cm, the extra size of a bath sheet allows you to wrap yourself up in it with ease. As well as bath towels and bath sheets, there are also hand towels which are a smaller towel usually measuring around 40cm x 60cm that are perfect for hanging in spots where you are regularly washing your hands, like near the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Finally, there are face washer towels which usually measure around 30cm x 30cm. With their smaller size, they are a handy towel to have when washing and drying your face.

How to care for towels

How to clean & wash towels

  • Always wash your bath towels/bath mats before using them as this will improve the performance and absorbency.
  • Some facial cleansers, other facial products and hair dyes that contain Benzoyl Peroxide can strip the colour or change the colour of your bath towel/bath mat. Therefore, it is important to rinse your skin thoroughly before using your bath towel/bath mat.
  • The use of too much detergent and over drying your towel/bath mat in a tumble dryer can leave it feeling stiff and rough. Be careful with the amount of detergent you use and only tumble dry on cool/warm settings.
  • The tumble drying of rubber-backed bath mats is not recommended.
  • Try to avoid the use of fabric softeners as they will leave a coating on your bath towel/bath mat which will reduce its absorbency.

How to store towels

The best way to store your towels will depend on how many towels you have, and whether you want to store them in a linen closet, in their designated bathrooms, or elsewhere. It’s typically best to have at least to sets of towels per person in the household to make washing and drying your towels less stressful. Ideally, you want to store your towels in a dry and cool place such as a linen closet, either rolled or folded, when not in use. Storing them as a set is a great way to keep your towel sets organised and makes it easy to grab all the pieces you need at once when you change over your towels. When in use, we recommend hanging them in a space where they get airflow and can dry completely in between uses.

How to fold & roll towels

To fold your bath sheets and towels, first lay the towel horizontally on a flat surface such as a table or countertop. Fold it in half lengthways and then fold in thirds along the width, making sure that any embellishments are facing outwards, and any hanging loops are tucked in. To fold your hand towels or face washers, lay them on a flat surface and fold them in half lengthways and then in half across the width, again ensuring any embellishments are facing outwards. Folding your towels is ideal for storing them as a stack in the bathroom or in a linen closet.

To roll your bath towels and bath sheets like a hotel or spa, first lay the towel flat on a surface. Fold the bottom left corner to the centre of the towel lengthwise, creating a triangle. Repeat with the bottom right edge and smooth the towel out. Once smoothed out, flip the towel over with the pointed edge on the right. Start tightly rolling the towel from the left-hand side. Once finished rolling, tuck the flap in so that the bath towel will hold its rolled position. Rolling your towels is ideal for storing them in baskets or displayed in the bathroom on a stool or on your vanity for that spa look

Additional points

  • Too much detergent weakens the fibres of the towel and can cause them to lose shape.
  • Rubber-backed bath mats should be hung in the shade as exposure to sun may cause rubber backing to perish.
  • Ensure washing detergent is dissolved to reduce towels’ propensity to harden.
  • Avoid using silicone-based fabric conditioners when washing – this coats the cotton fibres and can make the product less absorbent.
  • Tumble drying will assist in keeping towels soft, bulky and fluffy and help reduce linting.
  • Bath towels/bath mats should be hung up to dry after use.

Common terminology

What is GSM in towels?
  • GSM, yarn and ply—these are three terms you’ll likely come across when researching bath towels. GSM stands for grams per square metre and refers to the amount of fabric that has been used in a product. The more of the fabric it is made from that is used in a product, the higher the GSM. GSM in towels usually ranges from about 450gsm up to 700gsm. The higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the product is. The GSM does not affect absorbency, but a lower GSM towel will dry more quickly than towels of a higher GSM.
  • Yarn is made by twisting or bonding fibres together to produce a long strand in a process called spinning. Yarn may contain a single type of fibre or a blend of various types. For example – Cotton vs Polyester/Cotton blend. This can then be woven to create towels and other textiles.
  • Ply is a single layer or strand of yarn. Plying refers to the process in which 2 or more strands of yarn are twisted together to make a thicker, stronger thread. Single ply means that the product has been made by weaving single yarns together. Double or 2 ply means that 2 strands of yarn have been twisted together to make one thread which can then be woven into a product.
