Australia’s Sleep Struggles: Which Cities are Tossing and Turning the Most?
Article Sections:
At Pillow Talk, we understand just how vital a good night’s sleep is to your overall health, happiness and productivity. We’re always looking at how to help Australian’s get the best sleep possible, and our latest research dives into Australia’s sleep habits, revealing that many of us are finding it harder than ever to rest easy.
Back in September (2025), we analysed national search trends, using data from Google Ads Keyword Planner, to uncover which Australian cities are searching most for sleep-related terms. The results were adjusted for population to give a fair picture across the country’s ten largest cities.
The findings? Smaller cities like Canberra and Geelong are leading the list of most restless cities per capita, proving that our sleep struggles don’t always follow population size.
Canberra and Geelong: The Most Sleepless Cities
Nichola Higgs, one of Pillow Talk’s bedding experts, explains:
“Sleep is essential for health, well-being, and productivity. Our research shows that smaller cities like Canberra and Geelong are searching far more per person for sleep solutions than larger metros, which highlights how stress, lifestyle, and environment are affecting Australians nationwide.”
The Conditions Keeping Australians Awake
Our research found that insomnia remains Australia’s most common sleep concern, followed by parasomnias, nightmares, hypersomnia, and sleep anxiety.
Condition
National Avg Searches per Capita
City Struggling The Most
Insomnia
10.33
Brisbane (200.47)
Parasomnias
45.29
Perth (4.57)
Nightmares
19.89
Canberra (35.35)
Hypersomnia
16.18
Newcastle (23.55)
Sleep Anxiety
4.93
Canberra (8.85)
“Even small improvements in your sleep environment can make a real difference,” Nichola adds. “Many Australians don’t realise how much their mattress, pillow, quilt, lighting, or room temperature can impact sleep quality. Making one simple change, like switching to a supportive pillow, choosing the right quilt to regulate your body temperature, or using blockout curtains, can help reset your routine.”
How Australians Are Trying to Sleep Better
The research also showed that Australians are turning to natural and self-managed approaches in growing numbers. Searches for techniques and supplements such as:
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation (+240%)
- Meditation Before Bed (+84%)
- Magnesium Glycinate (+90%)
- Phenergan Sleep (+140%)
- L-theanine Sleep (+84%)
“People are clearly looking for ways to take control of their sleep,” Nichola notes, “What’s encouraging is that many of these solutions don’t have to be expensive or complicated. Simple practices like progressive muscle relaxation or guided meditation before bed can have a significant impact on sleep.”
“Even small environmental changes, like adjusting lighting, reducing screen time before bed, or optimising room temperature, can dramatically improve rest. These searches show that Australians are recognising the importance of both behavioural and environmental factors, not just relying on medication.”
Why Smaller Cities May Feel More Restless
So why are smaller cities like Canberra and Geelong topping the charts?
“There are a few reasons why smaller cities might appear more restless. Lifestyle pressures, work routines, longer commutes, and stress levels all play a role in how well people sleep. In many regional or mid-sized areas, residents may also have fewer local wellness or sleep-support services, which leads them to search online for solutions,” Nichola explains. “In contrast, people living in major metropolitan areas often have easier access to professional sleep clinics or specialised services, which can reduce the number of online sleep-related searches per capita.”
“The conditions driving these searches vary as well. In Canberra, nightmares are unusually high at 35 searches per 100k, while insomnia peaks at 200 per 100k in Brisbane. These city-specific trends show that Australians’ sleep struggles are not uniform, but are influenced by demographics, local stressors, and lifestyle patterns.”
